Nationally recognized urban education leader Meria Joel Carstarphen will become Superintendent of Atlanta Public Schools on July 7, 2014. Dr. Carstarphen’s arrival marks a new chapter for Atlanta Public Schools. In preparation for this new beginning, a transition process is underway to ensure that on Day One, Dr. Carstarphen and her team can begin the work to make Atlanta Public Schools the best in the nation.
From now to July 7, she and her team will review major structures in the organization including curriculum instruction, operations, finance, an assessment of the district’s needs, identification of priorities, and recruitment. She is also meeting with as many stakeholders as possible including parents, teachers, staff and others in the community in the coming weeks. She is excited about becoming familiar with the district and its culture, as well as understanding the needs and opportunities in the Atlanta community.
APS Superintendent Erroll B. Davis will work closely with Dr. Carstarphen through July 7 to ensure a smooth transition process.
